The musician's list goes back to his school days, when he was introduced to American hard rock with Styx, Foreigner, Bachman Turner Overdrive, and of course, KISS . Ellefson points out that when he saw Gene Simmons playing, his badass made the young man want to be like him and play.

Geezer Butler of Black Sabbath , and the track "Paranoid" also makes his list of honorees, and of course, Steve Harris of Iron Maiden , who according to Ellefson, "blew the roof off everything because he's the leader, he's the writer, and all the music is driven by the bass." To demonstrate his tribute to Harris, the bassist played a bit of the track "Killers."
