The Beatles: Meet the artist who collects more than 2,600 copies of the band's first album

“I was interested in the different ways in which covers age,” says Rutherford Chang

When music, art, the curiosity of the passage of time, and Instagram come together, results like those presented by artist Rutherford Chang We Buy White Albums profile can emerge.

As the name suggests, Chung collects various copies of the legendary and ultra-minimalist first album by the Beatles , from 1968. The copies are from various parts of the world, in different stages of condition, and form a curious mural on the artist's profile.

“I was interested in the different ways the covers age,” he tells The New York Times . “Because it’s an all-white cover, the changes are apparent. The serial numbers made collecting them feel natural, and the more I collected, the more interesting it became. As you can see, many of them have writing on them, and each one has a story. The accumulation of stories is part of it. But it’s also about how the physical object – the record – simply doesn’t exist anymore.”
