The Tool vocalist said that his vocals are reminiscent of when he was a competitive racer.

In a clip from the upcoming episode of Rock & Roll Road Trip , Maynard James Keenan explained his vocal style. He told host Sammy Hagar that it harkens back to his time as a competitive runner in high school.

In the preview, Hagar touches on the subject of singing. “What impresses me about you as a singer and lyricist is your ability to construct phrases. It’s brilliant. You come up with phrases that combine rhythm, but are so strange. Is that a battle for you, or does it come naturally?”

Keenan replied, “I remember running professionally in high school. And everyone has their own breathing rhythm. So if I'm going uphill, or downhill, or anything like that, my breathing follows those rhythms, which is weird.”
