Tool 's lead singer , Maynard James Keenan , has once again reinforced the ban on the use of cell phones during the band . The musician, who also leads the groups A Perfect Circle and Puscifer , applies the same restriction to them.
In an interview with comedian Clownvis Presley , Keenan stated that filming concerts is automatic and detrimental to the audience. According to him, recordings made with smartphones do not represent the true experience of what the show was like.
“It ends up being something people do without thinking, obstructing the view of those behind them. It’s irritating, distracting, and what you record with your phone doesn’t truly represent the experience. You won’t even watch it later,” he stated [transcription via NME ].
Maynard James Keenan also said that the cell phone ban at concerts was implemented to encourage fans to interact more with each other during the performances. In addition, the vocalist also asked the audience to refrain from using their electronic devices for a period of time.
“We kind of force everyone to interact with each other to watch the show, and just be present. Take a break. It’s only three hours,” he continued.
Despite the restriction, Tool makes an exception: recordings are only allowed during the last song of the show. The vocalist concluded his argument by joking that cell phones are terrible souvenirs and that afterwards, fans will never want to watch what they recorded. "That way you take home a bad souvenir that you'll never watch," he concluded.
