In a recent interview, Maynard James Keenan , vocalist for three rock bands, Tool , Puscifer , and A Perfect Circle , spoke about the criticism he receives regarding his projects outside the music world. The singer makes wine, practices Jiu-Jitsu, and co-owns a record store that features live music, a coffee shop, and ramen.
On Bert Kreischer's Bertcast , he discussed how the internet has become a space where people share opinions that weren't always solicited. This dynamic happens mainly because of social media. He recounted that after sharing several posts about working at the coffee shop with his wife, a man commented: "Just write songs, bro."
Keenan then responded to that comment: “Here’s the thing — I’ve written, recorded, released, and sung more songs than you’ll ever be able to. In fact, as of today, I will still write, record, release, and sing more songs than you’ll ever be able to, ever.” He further added: “But you can’t say that, because then you’re getting involved and you’re getting sucked into the hole. But just the idea of getting out of your way. I just can’t understand how he types with his fingers!”
Maynard's new businesses
Anyone who thinks Maynard has stopped venturing into other industries is mistaken. Next month, he will enter the gin and chocolate market.
Regarding the drink, Maynard commented: “We are working on a gin project. We have a complete profile, a patented recipe, a still, packaging, a name. But we are not yet publicizing it.”
Regarding chocolate, the vocalist made his decision during the interview. Todd Fox commented that wine pairs well with chocolate. He then suggested that Keenan start studying cocoa. And that's how he decided he needed to produce his own chocolate.
