Controversy has always surrounded the career of the Norwegian band Mayhem and its members. In 1991, vocalist Dead committed suicide, and two years later, guitarist Øystein "Euronymous" Aarseth was murdered by bassist Varg Vikernes .
Now, in a recent interview with Consequence of Sound , a new controversy has emerged. Bassist Jørn “Necrobutcher” Stubberud confessed to having planned to kill Euronymous.
“Our friend Per Ohlin [Dead] decided to take his own life. I was very sad about it, I was hurt for a long time. I still feel it today. But the first year was particularly bad, especially because my friend… [pause] 'friend' Euronymous took pictures of his corpse.”.
That didn't help much with the grieving. I felt I needed to go there and kill the traitor Øystein 'Euronymous'. But it's funny, because he acted behind my back, called Vikernes and put him on bass for the album [De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas]... and that's what happened, I think we all know what happened to him.”.
He goes on to say that when he learned of Euronymous' death, he ran home and got rid of "the weapons, drugs and everything, because I thought I would be the police's number one suspect.".
“I didn’t know that the Norwegian police already knew that Count Grishnackh [Varg Vikernes] had gone to Oslo to kill him. The police were monitoring Varg by phone and he spoke of this murder before leaving Bergen [Norwegian city]; therefore, the police already knew he was going.”.
