In an interview with Metal Insider, Max Cavalera spoke about the time he left Sepultura and created Soulfly. Check out his statement:
"Looking back now, it was a very difficult time in my life, a really tough period, because I never thought I would leave the band. For the first month, I didn't even want to play anymore. I was thinking, 'I'm tired of this.' I just wanted to get high and drunk and not care about anything. But then, little by little, I started writing some things and it started to come out, and it was getting good, because I was hitting the same elements as before. The riffs, structures, choruses, all of that was very familiar. But it was a difficult time and I'm glad it's over. I never want to go back to that time.".
Many people really liked Soulfly's first album; many say it's their favorite. Perhaps because there was a sense of despair in the album. It's something like you've lost everything and have to start over with what you have.
Sepultura was very close to my heart. It was my baby. Now, after all this time, I think, Igor and I should have fired the other idiots and continued with the name. Why we didn't do that, I don't know. At that time, I didn't have the vision to do it, so I just quit.
