Max Cavalera was the guest on episode 385 of the Appetite For Destruction and gave his opinion on the Pantera tribute reunion , which began in 2022.

Max showed his support for the decision of original members Phil Anselmo and Rex Brown to do a tribute tour to their time in Pantera, and compared it to what he and his brother, Iggor Cavalera , do on stage to remember their time in Sepultura .

“I think it’s cool that they’re doing this. I do something very similar with my brother, we go out [on tour] and play a lot of Sepultura albums that the fans really love. They never had the chance to see us, for one reason or another. And the fans get to see [Sepultura] with the real drums, the real vocals, and the real guitar. So it’s the closest you get to the real thing. And with Pantera it’s the same thing,” says Max (transcription via Whiplash ).

At another point, Max Cavalera commented on his friendship with vocalist Phil Anselmo, as well as the help the singer gave to Soulfly . “I’ve been friends with Phil for many years. In fact, I thanked him for lending me his guitar. Mike DeLeon is playing with us [in Soulfly]. He’s been playing with Phil Anselmo for many, many years. So, I thanked Phil for lending me his guitar,” Max recounts (transcription via Whiplash ).

Pantera recently toured Brazil with their tribute reunion show, Knotfest Brasil . Unfortunately for fans, the only member of the original lineup to visit Brazilian soil was singer Phil Anselmo, as bassist Rex Brown contracted COVID during the tour and had to cancel future performances.

Charlie Benante and Zakk Wylde filled in for the late Abbott Brothers, Vinnie Paul and Dimebag Darrell , who passed away in 2018 and 2004, respectively. Rex Brown was replaced by Derek Engemann of Cattle Decapitation .
