Max Cavalera spoke with Rock Mania about the current lineup of Sepultura , his former band, and commented that, in his view, "the soul of Sepultura" is with him and his brother, Iggor Cavalera .
The guitarist left Sepultura in 1997 , after the release of what ended up being one of the band's most successful albums, Roots (1996). His brother, drummer Iggor, left in 2006.
During the interview – which you can listen to in full at the end of this article – Max emphasizes that he doesn't intend to "speak ill," but makes it very clear that, in his view, "the soul of Sepultura" is with him and his brother (via Whiplash ):
“These songs have magic, on these albums we made. We put blood, sweat, anger, hate, love, and everything into these albums we made. Not wanting to speak ill of anyone, but people want to hear something as close to the original as possible, which is with Iggor on drums and me on vocals and guitar. I know they're still playing, but for me and most fans it's not the same thing. It's not out of malice, I'm not doing this to hurt them. Regardless of what the other Sepultura members are doing, what Iggor and I do is the real thing, it's the truth, it's the true Sepultura, the soul of Sepultura. The spirit of Sepultura is with us.”
Max also commented on his disappointment at never having played Rock in Rio with his current band, Soulfly. “It’s one of the things that hurts me the most. I don’t understand why we’re not invited, everyone else plays there… Deftones , System of a Down, and Soulfly has never been invited to Rock in Rio. For me, it would be really cool, because it’s one of the coolest festivals in the world.”
