Max Cavalera: "I never think about retiring"

Max Cavalera spoke in an interview about his legacy for music.

In a recent interview, Max Cavalera ( Soulfly, Sepultura, Cavalera Conspiracy ) was asked about his legacy.

He replied: “I hope it’s from someone who wasn’t afraid to take risks and try new things. I never let anything – people, ideas, or opinions – get in the way of what I had in my head. Or in my heart. If I feel it’s right, I do it. And I think that’s always been right. That’s how I discovered you could mix tribal music and metal, for starters.”

Max dismissed talk of a possible retirement. He said he will remain musically active as long as he is physically able to perform.

“I never think about retirement or anything like that,” he said. “ Slayer has scared me too much with that kind of thing. I don’t understand it. For me, if I retire tomorrow, what will I do? Stay home doing nothing? I’d drive everyone crazy, including myself,” he said.

“I want to do this until I die,” he added. “So, the business of passing the torch is cool, because I feel like all my children would do it for me. That comforts me. And knowing that I left a mark. It’s more than I could ask for. For a guy who started this in Brazil 30 years ago, leaving this mark is fantastic. So, I’m very, very proud of that.”
