Max Cavalera defended Axl Rose against the numerous online criticisms directed at the Guns N' Roses regarding his supposed weight and diminished vocals.
Appetite For Distortion podcast , the Brazilian musician said [transcription via Blabbermouth ]:
“My wife showed me the other day where some people were talking trash about Axl, and it’s like, come on, man. Screw you all. It’s a load of bullshit. Leave the guy alone. Because I’ve been through a bit of that. You gain a few pounds and people have to talk trash about your weight. What is that? Are we models? Are we Vogue models or are we rock stars?”
Soulfly vocalist continued: “It was never about weight. Who cares about someone’s weight? It’s about the music, man. About what they play. It’s about what you like in the music. So, yeah, I heard that and I was like, totally, like, ‘Fuck this shit.’ This is just cowardice… It’s like, what? You’re never going to get old? Man, it happens to everyone. All of us, most of us, are going to get old, and you’re not going to be the same… I wear these shoes with pride, the gray hair and the dots. I’m proud of it. It took me a long time to get this.”
Max concluded: “I’ve never met Axl, but I’m sure we’d get along great. I heard some of his assistants are Brazilian. That’s really cool,” referring to Rose’s management company, Team Brazil , and the singer’s longtime personal assistant, Beta .
