Max Cavalera revealed that he and Chino Moreno of Deftones Soulfly 's 1998 debut album

Soulfly , Chama last Friday, the 24th, and the album artwork includes a photo of Chino Moreno holding a hoe. This sparked curiosity, and in an interview with Alternative Nation , Max Cavalera told the story:

“We buried them at Indigo Ranch [Studios, in Malibu, California]. We knew there was a burial ground there, like, a Native American burial ground from 300 years ago. So, I wanted to capture the essence of the land, of the Native American power. Me and Chino from Deftones dug huge holes, put the ribbons in there. We closed the hole and left it overnight. The next day, we dug everything up. It was cool. It was kind of crazy, but fun at the same time.”

“That’s why there’s a picture of Chino with a shovel in the album, and the shovel is from when we were digging the holes—that’s why he’s holding a shovel. People ask, ‘Why is he holding a shovel in the picture?’ That’s why. Because we were digging holes at Indigo Ranch, in the Malibu hills,” Max explained.
