Soulfly's frontman criticized statements made by President Jair Bolsonaro.

Max Cavalera , leader of Soulfly and former Sepultura member Jair Bolsonaro 's election . Despite living in Arizona since 1992, Max told the Reading Eagle that he remains very close to Brazil. The controversial president, whose actions and policies closely resemble the far-right, worries the musician.

“Brazil has a history of corrupt leaders. Even though we’ve had a couple of good presidents who did good things for the country,” Max said. “I was there when Bolsonaro was elected, and there was a very strange atmosphere in the air. It was similar to when Trump was elected in the US. Half the country voted for him, but the other half didn’t.”

The musician criticized the current Brazilian president. "I don't like the things he says about indigenous people and Black people. He doesn't care about the indigenous community. That's really what bothers me the most," he added.

But he feels this is a phase that must pass. “Politics is so dirty; they’re all corrupt,” he said. “But everything passes. Even this guy will pass and someone will come along. Hopefully, it will be someone better.”

Bolsonaro has been criticized for his comments about gays and women, as well as for his nostalgia for the Brazilian Military Dictatorship, one of the darkest periods in the country's history. He also aims to toughen the armed forces and advocates that law enforcement agents shoot and kill criminals.
