“I received a direct message on Instagram from YUNGBLUD. I was driving back. I had a show with Billy Gibbons from ZZ Top in Las Vegas, and I was crossing the Mojave Desert, which is four hours away… And I thought, ‘YUNGBLUD?’”.
Matt continued: “He said, ‘Hey, man…’. I’d met the guy once before at an Interscope party during Coachella. And he asked, ‘Do you want to play drums on these songs?’ I said, ‘Oh, cool. Yeah. When?’ He asked, ‘Can you come tomorrow?’ So I drove to Los Angeles. And right then, Steven Tyler called me and said, ‘Hey, are you coming?’ I replied, ‘What?’ I had no idea they were recording together at the time. And then Joe and everyone else. But basically, the session I was in was with Joe, Steven, and YUNGBLUD, and we were recording the vocals.”.
“So I recorded 'My Only Angel' at Recording Studios in North Hollywood, California. […] I went in. Steven, Joe, and YUNGBLUD were there. I thought, 'This is amazing. What's going on, guys?' They said, 'We're collaborating.' And I looked at Steven and thought, 'Amazing.' And then I went back and recorded a revamped version of Aerosmith's 'Back In The Saddle.' Basically, it's the original tracks with new drums, new bass, and YUNGBLUD's vocals. And I looked at Steven and Joe and asked, 'Is this okay with you guys?' And they replied, 'Yes, we love it!'” Matt concluded.
Matt Sorum explains the collaboration between YUNGBLUD and Aerosmith
Matt also spoke about what it was like to see YUNGBLUD and Aerosmith working together. “It might not be the perfect combination for some people—like, ‘I don’t know if I like this kid,’ or whatever they say—but in my opinion it is, because the world changes.”.
“He wants to have the greatness of Aerosmith’s contribution to the world, in terms of rock and roll, as a remarkable achievement, or to be associated with these great artists, and with Steven Tyler, one of the greatest rock and roll singers of all time, in a collaborative work. I think it’s great for both sides and for the world. In my opinion, it’s a modern version of what we did, and it has to be that way. And I like the result. I think it’s really cool and I was happy to be a part of it. And I still am.”
