"It's surreal"
Troy Sanders, bassist and singer in Mastodon, spoke with Loudwire and hardDrive Radio about the award the band received last Sunday, the 28th, during the Grammy Awards.
Nominated for Best Metal Performance with the track “Sultan's Curse” and Best Rock Album with Emperor Of Sand, Mastodon took home the first award, beating performances by Body Count, Code Orange, August Burns Red, and Meshuggah.
“It’s surreal,” he says in the interview, “I think it’s great because of the attention we’ve received, and I’m not just talking about us, but all five bands that were nominated in the Metal categories.”
He says that the intention when founding Mastodon was never to receive awards or be recognized as "the best" at anything, "It was unexpected to reach this point, but now that we're here and have this recognition, I can only think of positive things."
The 2018 Grammy Awards marked the fourth time Mastodon was nominated in the category, and Troy reveals that they never considered not winning in past editions a defeat: "I was never disappointed about not winning the other times because I didn't expect us to win."
“Hearing our name called on Sunday was unexpected, and then a wave of bizarre emotions overwhelmed us – because it was something we never expected to happen,” he confesses.
