Bill Kelliher , guitarist for Mastodon , stated that some fans may not like the new sludge metal sound present on the band's upcoming album, their first since Emperor of Sand .
In an interview for the Tone-Talk , the artist revealed his prediction regarding the band's older fans, saying, "When we release an album, half of our fans are like, 'Screw these guys! They're selling out or they're becoming something we're not comfortable with anymore.' I feel like, 'You know what? We're gaining more of an audience now because we're actually growing.'"
“I mean, I’m 50 years old, but I’m going [to the studio] today,” says Bill. “I’m going to write something there; I’m not just going to go there all the time. And I feel like we have a lot of fans waiting who are like, ‘Oh, I can’t wait to see what they’re going to do next’ because… we mix things up,” stated the guitarist.
Kelliher also stated that no one has heard the songs from Mastodon's new project, but that it has a lot of good material and compositions of his that are making him proud and excited.
