The cover of “Stairway To Heaven” was done in tribute to the late manager Nick John
The progressive metal band Mastodon Led Zeppelin 's "Stairway To Heaven ." The version was made in tribute to the band's , Nick John , who passed away from pancreatic cancer. All profits from the single will be donated to pancreatic cancer research.
Mastodon wrote on Facebook: “In September 2018, we lost our best friend and biggest fan. Our manager Nick John. He was essentially the father of the band. He was always there for us, through the lowest and the highest times,” they explained.
“His favorite band, besides us and Gojira, was Led Zeppelin. We were asked to play 'Stairway To Heaven' at the funeral. Afterwards, we realized we should make a studio version and release it on Record Store Day as a tribute to Nick. The profits will be donated to pancreatic cancer research.”
The statement concludes with a thank you. “We wouldn’t be the band we are today if it weren’t for Nick John’s help. We miss him terribly and think about him all the time. We love you, friend.”
