Mastodon's last release, Emperor Of Sand, was in 2017

Brent Hinds , vocalist and guitarist of Mastodon , spoke about the music industry in an interview with Ultimate Guitar.

“What I really want to do, and I hope they let me do it, is take a break and be able to breathe,” he said. “This is definitely the most brutal job I’ve ever had. I’d rather go back to building houses again. It’s like, ‘Stop looking at me because I’m playing on a stage.’ I don’t care. Honestly, I never cared […]. All I care about is my peace of mind, which is leaving me. So I need to stop and recalculate. I need to decompress from all this, hit the reset button and pull myself together.”.

“I got married a year ago. I have to meet her family. I’ve been on tour constantly. It’s not healthy. The next step is to get healthy, and stay away from the music industry for about a year […] Everything will be fine. I can still play. If people want me to make good music, they need to leave me alone for a year.”.

The band recently lost their manager, Nick Johnson, to pancreatic cancer. Prior to that, the band cancelled a North American Dinosaur Jr.

The band won a Grammy in the Best Metal Performance category, and were also nominated for Best Rock Album for their release of Emperor Of Sand .
