Mastodon announced the departure of guitarist Brent Hinds from the quartet on Friday, March 7th. The artist had been part of the band since its founding in 2000.

The band made the announcement through their official Instagram , where they said: “Friends and fans, after 25 monumental years together, Mastodon and Brent Hinds have mutually decided to go their separate ways. We are immensely proud and deeply grateful for the music and history we shared, and wish him nothing but success and happiness in his future endeavors.”

On Thursday, March 6th, the band appeared at the Metropolitan Opera House in Brooklyn, New York, but without the guitarist. It was just the trio composed of Bill Kelliher , Troy Sanders , and Brann Dailor . The group spoke with opera composer Jake Heggie in a lecture called "Metal, Melville, and the Metropolitan Opera: Mastodon's Leviathan meets Heggie's Moby-Dick ," to discuss Moby Dick Herman Melville 's novel was the inspiration for the acclaimed album Leviathan (2004).

Mastodon shows without Brent Hinds

The band has not announced any official replacement; however, on Sunday the 9th, the group took to the stage alongside YouTuber Ben Eller for the Tool Live in the Sand , with Tool as the headliner.

According to the publication, the band has no plans to alter its future projects, meaning everything remains as planned. The group will tour North America with Coheed and Cambria in May and June. They will also play at Bloodstock in the UK on August 10th, which will feature Gojira as the headliner.
