Mary Weinrib, mother of Geddy Lee and Holocaust survivor, dies at age 95

Obituary celebrates the legacy of "perseverance, survival, and triumph" of the family matriarch

Mary Weinrib , Geddy Lee , died last Friday, July 2nd, at the age of 95. She would have celebrated her birthday on July 16th.

The obituary released by Benjamin's Park Memorial Chapel honors Mary's life for all her "perseverance, survival, and triumph." The mother of Rush survived the Holocaust, during which time she was held in several concentration camps, including Auschwitz, where she met her future husband and Geddy Lee's father, Morris Weinrib , with whom she reunited and started a family in Canada after the war ended.

"When Rush's first album was released, Mary covered her shop windows with Rush posters and gave the albums to any child who wanted them but didn't have the money to buy them," the text says.

“Suddenly, she was gone from all the lives in which she left a mark,” the musician wrote on social media. “Rest in peace, Mom.”.

In June, Mary and Lee were guests on the series From Cradle to Stage to discuss the musician's career on the show hosted by Dave Grohl alongside his mother . “From a very young age, I knew my parents were Holocaust survivors. In fact, I knew almost my entire family were Holocaust survivors,” the musician commented in the preview of the episode, already available on Paramount (via Rolling Stone ). “Most survivors don't discuss it, but I felt lucky because it wasn't a mystery in my home.”
