Marty Friedman on Kiko Loureiro in Megadeth: "It was like watching someone hook up with your ex."

Friedman played with the band for the first time in 23 years at the end of February.

Megadeth and Marty Friedman reunited for a historic band show in Tokyo, Japan, at the end of February. In a backstage interview, the guitarist spoke candidly about the feeling of seeing Kiko Loureiro in the position he held between 1990 and 2000.

During a press conference following the presentation, Friedman was candid about his feelings regarding the Brazilian guitarist for Megadeth, despite Kiko not being Marty's direct successor in the band.

“When I heard Kiko playing guitar… This is a very strange analogy, but it was like seeing someone having sex with your ex-girlfriend,” he said. At that moment, Dave Mustaine couldn't contain himself and exclaimed: “I knew you'd say that!”

Marty Friedman continued: "It was like watching someone else having sex with their ex-girlfriend and doing a great job, it was a really strange emotion," he concluded amidst laughter from the band.

Held on February 27th, the Megadeth show was titled They Only Come Out At Night and featured a global live stream. In addition to the performance, fans had access to footage from the trip to the country and behind-the-scenes footage, including a meeting of all the musicians and the interview in question.

Despite the humorous comment, Marty Friedman and Kiko Loureiro have a good relationship and frequently exchange compliments in the press. In 2020, Friedman collaborated on the track "Imminent Threat" Loureiro's solo album OPEN SOURCE

“Kiko and I are brothers. He’s a really, really good friend of mine. When he comes to Japan, we always hang out. I don’t think we’ve ever been in a room together playing guitars, but I certainly would love to. He’s a super, super, super guitarist, and a super guy. So when he invited me to play on his song, I jumped at the chance,” Friedman said about the collaboration in a conversation with Guitar World .
