Acclaimed film director Martin Scorsese will direct a film about David Johansen , lead singer of the iconic punk band New York Dolls . The news was announced yesterday, the 7th, Showtime Documentary Film

The production, which will be directed by Scorsese in partnership with David Tedeschi , will show intimate moments in Johansen's life, from her arrival in New York in the 60s, her time with the New York Dolls in the 70s, to her rebirth with the alter ego Buster Pointdexter , and her interest in blues in the 90s with Harry Smiths .

“I’ve known David Johansen for decades, and his music has been fundamental ever since I heard the [New York] Dolls when I was making Mean Streets ,” Scorsese states in the announcement. “Then and now, David’s music captures the vibrancy of New York City. I see him perform frequently, and as the years have gone by, I’ve come to know his musical inspirations in depth.”

“After seeing his show last year at the Café Carlyle, I knew I had to film it because it was so extraordinary to see the evolution of his life and musical talent in such an intimate setting. For me, the show captured the true emotional potential of a live performance.” Scenes from the Café Carlyle show will be included in the film about the artist.
