According to The New York Times , the reason for the revocation of one of the nominations was simply a correction of incorrect data after a more thorough review of the competing projects' data: Marilyn Manson was removed from the songwriting credits for the song "Jail," despite being listed on the song "Jail pt. 2," which does not have a nomination.

The musician was nominated in two categories for his collaboration with rapper Kanye West on the album Donda . With the loss of his Best Rap nomination, the artist, who is under investigation by the Los Angeles police, is still in the running for Album of the Year for his participation in the project.

In late November, the Grammy CEO spoke out in defense of the nominations of Manson and other artists facing serious abuse allegations. "We're not going to look at people's backgrounds, we're not going to check their criminal records, we're not going to analyze anything beyond the legality of our rules regarding project eligibility based on date and other criteria," Harvey Mason Jr. The Wrap .
