Despite multiple accusations of physical and sexual violence, psychological abuse, and even human trafficking that are currently in court, Marilyn Manson was one of the names included on the list of nominees for the 2022 Grammy Awards for his participation in Kanye West 's Donda , which is competing in the "Album of the Year" category.
In a new interview with The Wrap , the awards' CEO, Harvey Mason Jr., said that the Academy doesn't take into account "people's background" when examining submitted work, but that the physical presence of certain artists at the event can be controlled.
Other controversial figures also received nominations for the 2022 Grammys, such as rapper DaBaby , who recently made misogynistic and homophobic comments, and comedians Louis CK , who admitted to masturbating in front of women without consent , and Dave Chappelle , who was criticized for transphobic comments in his Netflix .
“We’re not going to restrict who can submit their material for consideration,” Harvey said. “We’re not going to look at people’s backgrounds, we’re not going to check their criminal records, we’re not going to analyze anything beyond the legality of our rules regarding project eligibility based on date and other criteria. If it meets the requirements, the material can be submitted for consideration.”
“What we will control are our stages, shows, events, and red carpets,” he continued. “We’ll take a look at who is asking to be a part of it, to participate in person, and we’ll make our decision. But we will not prohibit people from submitting their work to be voted on.”
Recently, Rolling Stone published a lengthy report with 55 sources interviewed describing Marilyn Manson as a serial abuser and detailing a series of accusations against the singer, including racism and abuse of power.
