Mariah Carey may finally release her "lost" grunge album, which was recorded and discarded in the 90s. In an interview with Jimmy Fallon , the singer said she is exploring the necessary steps to bring the project to light.
The singer revealed the existence of the alternative rock project in her memoir, The Making Of Mariah Carey , in 2020 [via NME ]. “I’d bring my little alternative rock song to the band and hum a silly guitar riff. They’d pick it up and we’d record it right away. It was irreverent, raw, and urgent, and the band got excited. I really started to love some of the songs. I was totally immersed in my persona. I was playing with the style of the white, cool, grunge, punk-light female singers who were popular at the time.”
Titled Someone's Ugly Daughter, the 1995 album features the band Chick . At the time, Mariah Carey said, via a Twitter post, that she made the album "just for laughs, but it helped me get through some dark days." She also said that her friend Clarissa sings the lead vocals on the album. However, in an interview with Rolling Stone , Carey confirmed that she found the "lost" version of the album with her own lead vocals.
Mariah Carey has plans to release the album
Years ago, the artist made several statements about her desire to release the album. Now, the release seems close to happening, because during a recent conversation with singer SZA on Apple Music , Mariah talked about the album and described the cover art and a song, which is apparently called "Hermit".
Mariah also spoke about the album during an appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon last Tuesday, the 30th. “I don’t know which record label owns it. I don’t think it’s any of them, because that’s just how it happened. But let’s discuss it…”
She continued: “I’ve always regretted not releasing it, but they kind of held me back at that time. Back then, it was Sony. We love Sony now, but back then… a little controlling, a little controlling.”.
