Ever since it was announced that it would take place this year, Maranhão Open Air has received criticism for being associated with one of the organizers of Metal Open Air, which took place 10 years ago and was the biggest failure and scandal in the national metal scene.
In an official statement, which you can read in full at the end of this article, the organizers emphasize that the venue can accommodate 5,000 people and that "the team studied all the negative aspects of the previous version and solutions were presented for the categorical and effective operation of Maranhão Open Air 2022".
Metal Open Air
Scheduled to take place on April 20, 21, and 22, 2012, the event was supposed to feature 47 shows by national and international artists. Only 14 performed, in a structure quite different from what had been promised. The last date ended up being canceled.
The public also suffered from poor conditions, including accommodations in stables, lack of hygiene, transportation problems, scarce food options, and reports of robberies inside the venue where the event was to take place.
A report by G1 Maranhão indicates that the public has still not been compensated for the losses suffered. In 2018, the court ordered the organizers of Metal Open Air to pay compensation to the affected consumers for moral damages. The amount for each person was R$ 3,541.83.
The event featured a lineup that included Venom, Saxon, Anthrax, Blind Guardian, Grave Digger, Headhunter DC, Terra Prima , and Hangar . All of them canceled their performances.
Official statement from the organizers of the Maranhão Open Air
"Rising from the ashes and forged under the flames of World Metal! Maranhão Open Air 2022 is confirmed and will take place on November 12th and 13th in São Luís, at the Rio Poty Hotel.".
To the delight of many and the dismay of those who opposed the repositioning of the initiative, ten years after its first edition, MOA returns with the goal of presenting a new image for the event, completely restructured and produced to deliver the best possible quality for heavy music lovers. Featuring 24 bands, both national and international, duly contracted and divided over two days.
Our team studied all the negative aspects of the previous version and solutions were presented for the categorical and effective operation of Maranhão Open Air 2022. This time, the event's location was one of the main concerns to facilitate access for the public, bands, technical team, and other service providers and collaborators. Therefore, choosing the Rio Poty Hotel, a space with capacity for 5,000 people and complete security for those attending the festival, is the most realistic and practical solution.
The festival has been in the works since February 2022, through various actions ranging from mapping out the bands to compose the lineup to scheduling the finalization of contracts with each act and service providers. We will soon be releasing video announcements and promotional materials featuring each of them.
We can't erase the past, but giving it new meaning is possible! Our purpose is to make it truly worthwhile! Other questions and clarifications that we gathered during the festival's pre-production period will be answered through the MOA Festival FAQ, on social media, and on the event's official website.
Long live Brazilian Metal! Welcome to Maranhão Open Air!!!
