Rock music is far from being the most popular style in recent years, but the Italian phenomenon Måneskin and the viral success of the band's songs on TikTok were crucial in "reviving" the musical genre in 2021.

As reported by Igor Miranda , the analysis of this phenomenon was published in the annual report of Viberate , a company specializing in studying data and trends in the music industry.

Despite the dominance of pop, hip hop, and Latin music on streaming platforms, rock artists represent 14% of Spotify's Top 50, for example. Within the sample of the 500 most played artists on the radio, rock is the second most relevant genre in the last year.

But the success of rock music didn't come solely from Måneskin. Artists from other musical genres also ventured into rock, or at least pop punk, and had good results in "reviving" the style, such as Machine Gun Kelly and Olivia Rodrigo .

Viberate 's analysis also points out that the video platform TikTok has established itself as the main tool for discovering new artists. "Thanks to punk rock making waves on TikTok, the sound is reaching new generations, even when represented by artists who wouldn't normally be considered representative of the genre," the report explained regarding Gun Kelly and Olivia, rap and pop artists, respectively.

Among the names that stood out in rock or its subgenres and promise to grow in 2022, in addition to the Italians, Mitski and Crawlers from alternative rock, Tom Grennan, Glass Animals, Wet Leg and Sam Fender from indie rock were mentioned.
