Many people don't know this, but Machine Head almost had a Brazilian guitarist. Jean Patton , from Project46 , revealed details of his experience auditioning to tour with the group at the end of 2019.
The opportunity to audition came through Rodrigo “Shot Rod” Fantoni, guitar tech and a friend of Patton's. Despite being a Machine Head fan since adolescence, the Project46 guitarist was "shocked" by the possibilities that the audition could bring – and the future of the band itself if he were chosen.
Even with three albums released and appearances at festivals like Rock in Rio, Monsters of Rock, and Knotfest, Patton says he had an "internal psychological drama, a feeling of insecurity" about participating in the auditions.
The test consisted of a phone interview and a video with a short set of eight songs featuring rhythm parts, solos, and backing vocals. Among the tracks chosen by the band were songs like “Imperium”, “This Is The End”, “Locust”, “Darkness Within”, “Halo”, and “Aesthetics of Hate”.
In addition to Patton's detailed account, the video also includes excerpts from the set sent to the group for review. Watch below:
