David Draiman and M. Shadows , vocalists for Disturbed and Avenged Sevenfold respectively, criticized the bill that was approved by the Florida State Senate in the United States and is awaiting the governor's signature.
The bill, nicknamed "Don't Say the Word Gay," prohibits classroom discussions about sexual orientation and gender identity for children under 10 years of age in that state.
Last Thursday, March 10th, Draiman used Twitter to share an article from the Miami Herald showing the protests against this bill and wrote:
"That's ridiculous. #GAYGAYGAYGAYGAYGAYGAY."
M. Shadows from AX7 retweeted, adding: “As a parent of 7 and 9 year olds who have already asked about sex and used the word 'gay' in a derogatory and negative way, I know that children of that age are already exposed to these things, so I feel that the sooner we can explain and show empathy for all people, the better… including at school.”
Although Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has not yet said whether he will sign the bill or not, he has already stated his support for the idea.
“Clearly, we see a lot of focus on transgender issues these days, sending the message to children that they can choose their gender and all that. I don’t believe that’s what parents want for these young children,” DeSantis said during a conference in Jacksonville on March 4.
