Under the red lights and chandeliers of Fabrique Club, the band Lucifer made their Brazilian debut with an impeccable show last Saturday, the 3rd, in São Paulo, as part of the tour promoting their latest release, the album Lucifer IV , from 2021.
The intimate and rustic atmosphere of the music venue was the perfect stage for the classically refined performance of a relatively young band, less than a decade old, despite its experienced members, notably the couple Johanna Sadonis , former vocalist of the defunct The Oath , and Nicke Andersson , known for his work in the bands The Hellacopters and Entombed .
After opening acts by Brazilian bands Grindhouse Hotel and Mattilha , Lucifer took the stage with a blend of heavy rock and doom in a seventies-inspired sound, yet still unique and original. Lucifer evokes feelings that seem lost in rock music today, from live sounds that surpass the studio to flirting with moral panic while singing about the delights and tragedies of passions so intense that they could condemn the woman possessing such voluptuous feelings to the inquisitorial bonfires.
Under the consistent leadership of vocalist Johanna Sadonis, Lucifer's show reverberates the seventies sound of the band's four previously released albums, but gains new intensity and purpose with the loud drumming of Nicke Anderson, the dynamic captivating guitars of Martin Nordin and Linus Björklund alongside the understated bass of Harald Göthblad.
On stage, the focus is on the music: Johanna leans on the microphone and lets the magic of her own presence spread naturally, in a carefree way that only rock stars aware of their own magnetism could, while no member is highlighted by the lighting, which almost exclusively favors the sign with the band's name in red in the background.
The two guitarists still have moments of greater prominence in the solos, but the bassist prefers to maintain a continuous and serious work lost in his own musical world, while Nicke Andersson hardly gives fans the chance to see him: in the few moments away from the drums, the musician from The Hellacopters was brief in greeting the audience in a gesture of gratitude for the affection received.
With the venue packed and many couples in the audience, the group was well received with many shouts of "Lucifer, Lucifer" in between songs, even considering the more introspective nature of the audience, who reserved displays of affection for applause and making horns in the air at the end of each song.
From the album Lucifer IV, released in 2021, the singles “Crucifix (I Burn For You)” and “Bring Me His Head” were sung with increasing enthusiasm, with Johanna even daring to let the fans in the front row sing the chorus of the latter. But the highlights of the night were the ballad “Dreamer” and the highly anticipated encore.
Lucifer will also perform in São Paulo on an extra date announced as "a secret show" by the singer as she left the stage. The show takes place next Tuesday, December 6th, with limited tickets available at La Iglesia .
