Lou Ottens, inventor of the cassette tape, dies at age 94

The engineer also played an important role in the invention of the CD

Lodewijk Frederik Ottens , better known as Lou Ottens , passed away at the age of 94. The Dutchman was responsible for the team that invented the cassette tape, or K-7.

In the 1960s, Lou Ottens developed the cassette tape when he was head of product development at Philips . The idea stemmed from the engineer's desire to deal with a product smaller than the old cartridge tapes and LPs.

He was also part of the teams that invented the CD (Compact Disc) and Video 2000, a video tape format that rivaled VHS.

Rest in peace, Lou Ottens.
