Lobão shared his views on Heavy Metal during an interview on the Benja Me Mucho last Tuesday night, the 7th. The musician compared the genre to sertanejo (Brazilian country music).
In a nearly 2-hour conversation, the Brazilian musician and journalist Benjamin Back discussed the current music scene, the 80s, the singer's career, and also touched on the Heavy Metal style, at which point Lobão said that "metal only existed after Uriah Heep ," at which point Benjamin Back asked if he liked the genre.
In a controversial statement, the musician said [ transcription via Wikimetal ]: “Heavy Metal is like Sertanejo to me. Metal is a degeneration because, when it comes, it loses all its dark essence. It becomes something Nordic. The first sign of this was 'Immigrant Song' by Led Zeppelin , who made the song for the people in Sweden or Norway, I don't know. Which I think is great.”
The musician continued: “Now, the whole Hard Rock scene has Blues in it. Black Blues is in Black Sabbath , Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin, Free, Cactus, Mountain, and Ten Years After . You have that blackness, but metal becomes a very white, Nordic sound, absolutely devoid of swing and blackness. It also has an Olympic fixation on being fast and 'p*udurescente' (a play on words, combining 'p*du' - a slang term for penis - and 'p*udurescente' - meaning something like 'I have a huge p*ssy'). That sound is: 'I have a huge p*ssy'.”
Lobão's opinion on Sepultura.
The journalist asks if Lobão likes certain heavy metal bands, such as Sepultura . Lobão said:
“I really like it. But Sepultura is a perversion of metal, because when they made 'Roots, Bloody Roots,' they mixed the indigenous people with Carlinhos Brown , they brought back blackness. Without black music, rock and roll isn't rock and roll. Then you get those guys who look like they have a dick up their ass, it's impossible. It sounds like country music. That falsetto, that guy screaming and the guy playing, shredding the guitar. You look like a desperate typist. What kind of hysteria is this?”
“Because it loses the feeling, right? Because rock, when you hear Steve Marriott singing, Terry Reid , or Robert Plant , or Ian Gillan, or David Byron from Uriah Heap … They have a feeling in that, they still have something of blackness. These guys… It looks like a juggling act, because why? Then they put the robot there, the puppets. It looks like I'm watching a Thieves Park show, a circus.”
It's worth remembering that the musician was booed during the second edition of Rock in Rio, on January 23, 1991 , where he was scheduled to play on the metal day, opening for Sepultura and Megadeth . On that occasion, the musician swore and left the stage.
"Stop, stop. Listen here: I know there are people applauding, but we're not clowns, no way, for you to be throwing cans at this shit, this shit here! And I wanted to say something else to you: go treat your asses badly, you got it? Go fuck yourselves, all of you, except those who aren't getting fucked. Go fuck yourselves, you idiots!" [via Uol ]
