Monsters and inexplicable events have always stirred people's imaginations. With cinema, unsettling stories shaped the horror genre and created true classics.
Many of these films have inspired artists to pay homage to their favorite works, resulting in numerous music videos inspired by the genre. Just in time for Halloween, Wikimetal has created a list of some of the most memorable music videos inspired by horror films. Check it out:
"Scream!", by the Misfits
The Misfits not only drew inspiration from horror films, but they went deep into homage, calling on George A. Romero to direct the music video for "Scream!". The director practically created the zombie subgenre with the classic 'Night of the Living Dead' from 1968.
“Hellraiser” by Motörhead
In this metal anthem video, Motörhead faces one of horror's most iconic characters: Pinhead from the movie 'Hellraiser'. Lemmy confronts the creature and loses. See what happens when one of the greatest metal bands falls into the monster's hands.
“Her Portrait in Black” by Atreyu
The 'Underworld' franchise, a series of films about vampires and werewolves, has gained a legion of fans over the years. It's no surprise, given the dark and fantastical nature of the films, that the metal community would engage with them. One of Atreyu's most popular singles, "Her Portrait in Black," was part of the original soundtrack for 'Underworld: Evolution'. The music video features scenes from the film.
“(He’s Back) The Man Behind the Mask” by Alice Cooper
This song is on the soundtrack of 'Friday the 13th Part VI: Jason Lives'. Jason Voorhees appears in the gothic and cheesy video for the track, performed by one of the most famous names in rock history.
"Square Hammer" by Ghost
Many people think of Bela Lugosi as the famous vampire Dracula. But, in fact, the 1922 film 'Nosferatu' was the first to show a version of the character. It's one of the most influential horror films in history and, for that reason, is honored by Ghost in the music video for "Square Hammer," which reimagines some of the best scenes from the classic.
“The Wicker Man” by Iron Maiden
'The Wicker Man' is the name of the 1973 cult film. Critically acclaimed, the movie follows a man who enters an isolated community to try and uncover the truth about the murder of a young girl. Iron Maiden references the film in their music video of the same name.
"One" by Metallica
The song “One” tells the story of a World War I soldier who experiences extreme tragedy. It is based on the 1971 drama, 'Johnny Got His Gun', which focuses on a protagonist who loses most of his senses, some limbs, and his face. It is a critique of the horrors of war and the traumas that affected many soldiers.
“Spit It Out” by Slipknot
'The Shining', considered by many to be the best horror film of all time, continues to appear frequently in pop culture. Slipknot pays homage to Stephen King's classic in the music video for "Spit It Out," placing their masks on the faces of characters from Stanley Kubrick's film.
“Psycho” by Puddle of Mudd
The music video for "Psycho" by Puddle of Mudd is a dream for horror fans. Featuring elements and characters from 'Halloween', 'I Know What You Did Last Summer', 'The Texas Chainsaw Massacre', 'Postergeist', and of course, 'Psycho', the video is the ultimate homage to the genre.
“Living Dead Girl” by Rob Zombie
When you think of the intersection between horror and music, Rob Zombie is the first name that comes to mind. However, before he became a film director, the video for "Living Dead Girl" served as an expression of his love for the history of the genre. The entire aesthetic and story of the clip were inspired by the 1920s expressionist classic 'The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari'.
