Sum 41 vocalist Deryck Whibley Linkin Park fans' eyes light up when he invited Mike Shinoda onto the stage at the Reading and Leeds festival to sing the hit song "Faint".
Almost four years after the performance, the singer was asked in an interview during The Jasta Show Chester Bennington 's place in the nu-metal band. Bennington died at age 41, and Linkin Park has not released music without him since then, nor has it mentioned seeking a new vocalist.
For Deryck – as well as probably for many of the fans – the idea seemed simply absurd. “I think that’s an impossible task; that’s an impossible place to fill. I don’t even know if they’ll ever do anything [about it]. I have no idea what that would look like or who [the new vocalist] could be,” said the singer.
Presenter Jamey Jasta , however, didn't give up on the idea and commented that Deryck's vocal style would fit well with Linkin Park. "I'll take the compliment, but I don't know if I would do it. I don't know if I agree with you," Whibley replied, unyielding.
Asked a third time if he would at least consider the possibility, Deryck Whibley repeated his previous answers: “That’s so unlikely that it seems strange to even think about it, even jokingly. I don’t know. I don’t know how someone could take that place. I think it would be difficult,” he concluded.
