The group, known for their chaotic and explosive shows, is sure to thrill audiences once again during their tour in Brazil. In this article, we'll revisit some iconic performances by the band led by Fred Durst .
1997 – Pinkpop
The band's participation in the Dutch festival took place during the tour for Three Dollar Bill, Y'all , their debut album, released in July of that year. The performance helped solidify the group's presence in Europe, as they were still on the rise.
The show presents a raw and more aggressive record of Limp Bizkit, including tracks like "Counterfeit," "Stuck," and "Nobody Loves Me." Guitarist Wes Borland already showcased his experimental and peculiar look, using body paint and bizarre masks. Also noteworthy is their aggressive cover of George Michael .
1999 – Rooftop concert in the United States
The show marks Limp Bizkit's transition to the mainstream in 1999, the year of the release of Significant Other . The group played in an unusual location: on the roof of a building in Boston, located in the Fenway neighborhood.
The band had given clues to their location via radio station WAAF , but a rival station, WBCN , leaked the information to the police, who arrived at the scene. Because of this, the band members had to escape through a window of a building belonging to Ministry , Al Jourgensen .
1999 – Limp Bizkit concert at Woodstock
When talking about Limp Bizkit, this is undoubtedly the most memorable moment. It can easily be considered the most infamous show in the band's history. The performance took place on the second day of the festival, amidst intense heat, a long distance between stages, exorbitant prices, and audience frustration.
“Break Stuff” is often cited as the trigger for the chaos. Durst seemed to further fuel the crowd's anger, and with a fiery speech, provoked the wrath of the audience, already extremely annoyed by the disorganization of the event. He said:
“They want to ask us to ask you to relax a little. They say that many people are getting hurt. Don’t let anyone get hurt, but I don’t think you should relax. Relax? That’s what Alanis Morissette did to you.”
After that, the audience began tearing pieces off the fence and barriers of the structure while the band played, resulting in destruction, looting, and violent incidents. Many of these barriers were used to surf on the crowd.
Later that same day, during the Red Hot Chili Peppers' , fires broke out. With pieces of broken structures and accumulated trash – as the festival had few trash cans – the audience used these elements as fuel to create bonfires, destroying trailers, portable toilets, and tents.
Although not the sole cause, the concert is considered to have been the trigger for the festival's total disaster. More behind-the-scenes details about the event can be found in the documentary Total Disaster: Woodstock 99 , available on Netflix .
2001 – Rock in the Park
Considered one of the band's best live recordings, the performance at the German festival captured Limp Bizkit at the height of their popularity. With the release of Chocolate Starfish and the Hot Dog Flavored Water (2000), the setlist featured a hit machine including “Take a Look Around”, “Hot Dog”, “Rollin' (Air Raid Vehicle)” and “My Way”. In 2008, it was officially released as a DVD under the title Rock im Park 2001 .
2009 – Return of the classic lineup in Latvia
The performance in the capital city of Riga served as the opening show for the Unicorns N' Rainbows , and marked Borland's return to the group after an eight-year hiatus, bringing back the iconic lineup consisting of Fred Durst, Wes Borland, John Otto (drums), Sam Rivers, and DJ Lethal .
The date May 20th of that year held a special significance for Lethal, as the artist was born in the city. At the time, the band chose to visit Eastern European countries that had not yet been included in previous tours, such as Bulgaria, Estonia, and Romania.
The setlist featured a complete nostalgia trip from the golden era, focusing on hits from Significant Other and Chocolate Starfish and the Hot Dog Flavored Water . The band played 21 songs. Results May Vary (2003), recorded with Mike Smith on guitars, only included "Eat You Alive" in its repertoire.
2024 – Limp Bizkit at Lollapalooza Brazil
The show at the festival, held at the Interlagos racetrack in March of last year, showcased a more mature phase for the band. Demonstrating that the energy of their classics was still captivating, the group stood out for presenting a more "peace and love" Fred Durst compared to his controversial persona of the past.
Focusing on celebrating nu metal, the performance proved that Limp Bizkit has a loyal and fervent audience in the country, delivering a furious, rebellious set that served as a celebration of the 2000s. It was considered one of the best shows of the festival in specialized lists and polls.
