Limp Bizkit , through Fred Durst , filed a lawsuit against Universal Music Group (UMG) last Tuesday, October 8, 2024. The musician, through his lawyers, accuses the record label of failing to pay millions in royalties owed to the band.
As reported on the Blabbermouth website , the lawsuit, filed in a California federal court, alleges that UMG adopted a fraudulent practice to withhold artists' earnings. According to Durst, the record label deliberately hides the amounts owed, keeping the profits for itself. The lawsuit also seeks compensation for other artists from Flawless Records, Durst's label.
The band is seeking $20 million in damages.
Fred Durst also claims he never received royalties from Universal, despite the band Limp Bizkit having sold over 45 million records and accumulated over 450 million streams on Spotify this year alone. Limp Bizkit is seeking $20 million in damages, but believes the total debt could exceed $200 million.
Court documents indicate that UMG informed Durst's representatives of a debt of approximately US$43 million, which would need to be settled before any royalty payments.
However, the musician's legal team claims to have discovered that Flip Records, the band's former label, has already earned millions in profits shared with Universal.
In technical terms, the lawsuit seeks to recover unpaid royalties, annul Limp Bizkit's contract with the record label, and restore the copyrights to the recordings. Finally, it seeks compensation for the violation of these rights.
