Led Zeppelin was formed in London in 1968 by guitarist Jimmy Page , bassist John Paul Jones , vocalist Robert Plant , and drummer John Bonham . Their first album, which bore the band's name, was released on January 12, 1969, and considered by critics "a revolution in the history of Hard Rock and Heavy Metal".
The second album, Led Zeppelin II , released in October of the same year, was an even bigger success than the first, topping the charts in the US and the UK. Hits like "Immigrant Song," from their third album, and "Stairway To Heaven," from the following album, marked the band's career.
After their eighth album, In Though The Out Door , during rehearsals for an American tour, Bonham died in his sleep, asphyxiated by his own vomit. The drummer was cremated on October 10, 1980. Following his death, the band announced their breakup.
Despite numerous reunion shows with various drummers, most notably Bonham's son, Jason , the band never officially announced a comeback. Led Zeppelin was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1995 and is still considered one of the most influential bands of all time.
