In an interview on a Swedish TV program, Metallica drummer Lars Ulrich spoke about how the relationship between the members of Metallica has changed over the years. Check out his statement:

“When our bassist Jason Newsted left, it was the first domino in a long list of strange things that happened. And for two years it was kind of fragile, we were going through a lot of problems. On the other hand, since 2003, we've been doing well.”.

A man named Phil came, a psychiatrist or a team psychologist, it doesn't matter. He came and we talked to him and amongst ourselves for two years, while we worked and made progress. And that helped us a lot.

It's been ten or twelve years since then that we've been fine. We talk, we're civil, we understand each other's limits. It took twenty or thirty years, but we learned to listen to each other. The word 'empathy' didn't exist in our vocabulary in the first few decades, but it's very important today, to listen and try to understand each other's point of view.

And also, I think there's a lot more trust between us today. We realize how much we need each other. Metallica is better as a unit than a bunch of closed-minded guys playing together.”.
