In an interview on Eddie Trunk's podcast, Metallica drummer Lars Ulrich was asked about his pride in "Lulu," the band's album with Lou Reed, and how the experience of recording that work influenced the band's next album, "Hardwired... To Self Destruct.".
Regarding whether he would change anything about "Lulu," Lars replies: "No matter how many people speak ill of 'Lulu,' I wouldn't change anything. I would still challenge people, at least most musicians: If Lou Reed called you and asked to play with you, you wouldn't say no. And if you did say no, I would question you as an artist."
Regarding how making "Lulu" influenced "Hardwired... To Self Destruct," Lars said:
“When we made the album with Lou five years ago, we were impressed by how impulsive he can be. And being with him… We’d take something, we’d create as we played. There was this impulsive, momentary energy.”.
And we would sit and think, 'Ah, that turned out well, I think we're getting closer to something. Let's start thinking.' And he would sit and say, 'No, it's done!' And we would say, 'Huh?' He would say, 'It turned out great.' We had an attitude of 'Let's do it again, let's do it better.' And he would say, 'No, I'm happy. It was great. It was a moment.' And I think that kind of acceptance of the moment is something we didn't know.
And I think it definitely gave us a new way of interpreting the creative process, or gave us a new layer. That you can be impulsive like that and you can be happy recognizing that what happened in that minute has a very beautiful element because it was done in that minute.”.
