Metallica drummer Lars Ulrich spoke about the band's new song, " Hardwired ," which was released yesterday. In an interview with Rolling Stone, the musician discusses the sound of the new track and the album:
Listen to Hardwired , the new song by Metallica.
"That was the last song we recorded for the album. We started working on this album by throwing some different ideas around. The format of the album, as a collection of songs, didn't emerge until we really went deep into it. Over time, the songs became more concise, shorter, and more polished.".
A few months ago we were sitting around and thought we needed a song that was fast, crazier, and that became Hardwired. It's something that just happened. I think James wrote and recorded it in less than a week, which for us is basically a nanosecond.”
Regarding his statement that the songs on "Hardwired... To Self Destruct" would be less frenetic than those on "Death Magnetic":
Most of the songs are simpler. We introduce a mood and stick with it, unlike some we've done before where it's a riff that goes from this to that, and becomes a journey with different horizons. The songs on this album are more linear. "Less frantic" in the sense that there are fewer pauses and restarts in the songs. It flows more than the last album.

Lars also said that the album was influenced by the re-release of “Kill 'Em All” that happened this year: “When we played “Kill 'Em All” in its entirety, I realized that it’s very cohesive. It’s very characteristic in its speed, but it’s simpler. The songs are longer and not so progressive. It’s a world of its own. And I think some elements of that ended up appearing on the new album. I would say that there’s a residue of the rediscovery of “Kill 'Em All” that ended up appearing in the compositions.”
