Ulrich explains the band's songwriting process
In an interview with a California radio station, Metallica Lars Ulrich discussed the progress of songwriting for Metallica's new album.
“We have to sit down and make a new album, period. But between Ozzy tributes, James being busy last year, playing at Giants games , some shows in Europe, and this and that, we have little time. I think the best way to explain it is to say that today we are one day closer to releasing a new album. Literally.”
Ulrich also expressed optimism regarding the progress of new compositions: “Joking aside, I’m convinced we have 90% of the album written. It’s just a matter of organizing all the riffs, connecting this and that, and forming a song. I’m really excited about it.”
Ulrich explained a bit about Metallica's songwriting process, noting that songs are rarely worked on individually. "We develop 10 ideas and work on them. We move ideas between songs and combine formats."
The drummer also used the interview to make it clear that Metallica is not delaying the next album on purpose: “We’ve made progress, but not as fast as we’d like and certainly not as fast as our fans would like. It’s certainly not because we’re avoiding it.”
