Lars Ulrich says it would be "challenging" to make a Metallica biopic; find out more here.

Although he didn't like the idea, he imagined what it would be like if he actually did it and chose part of the cast.

Biopics about celebrities seem to be a trend that's here to stay, especially now that it's reached the world of rock. But, at least if it's up to Lars Ulrich , Metallica won't be part of it.

Speaking to Collider in an interview (via Kerrang! ), the drummer stated that making a biopic of the band would be "challenging." "I'm not sold on that idea. The idea of writing an autobiography, I think it's challenging because I think you'd have to be completely truthful, and to be 100% truthful, it's hard to tell the stories without bringing other people into it, and then you kind of get into that whole thing where maybe the protagonist in that particular story wouldn't want to see the story being told."

He also mentions that Through the Never , from 2013, was made due to the band's interest in exploring their own history and presenting a different work to fans, but, according to him, a biographical film follows different rules.

“I think that somehow I’m kind of attached to the truth, for some reason, so if you’re not going to tell the truth, then maybe you shouldn’t say anything. That’s where things get a little complicated for me, but we’ll see what happens.”

Despite not liking the idea of making a movie about Metallica, Lars imagined what it would be like if he actually did. For the cast, the drummer chose James Spader to play him, while his bandmates had some different options: "the Cowardly Lion from The Wizard of Oz would be [ James ] Hetfield and Carlos Santana would be Kirk [ Hammett] ."
