Chris Jericho , from Foggy , said during an interview that Lars Ulrich is a "great drummer" and compared him to Ringo Starr.
“People pick on Lars – it’s a funny thing to do – in the same way people pick on Ringo,” Chris said during the …And Podcast For All . “Lars is the Ringo of heavy metal. And what I mean by that is that Ringo plays what’s best for the music and not the flashiest part, not what’s going to put him on the cover of Modern Drummer [a magazine specializing in drums]. He plays what’s right for the melody. And that’s why Lars is great.”
Chris also compared him to other thrash metal drummers, explaining that Ulrich decided to simplify his drum lines. “Lars was very influential on Metallica’s early work. But then, after …And Justice For All , [he must have thought], ‘What am I going to do? I’m not Charlie Benante [ Anthrax ]. I’m not Dave Lombardo [ Slayer ].’ Those are the guys he was kind of competing with. ‘I have to go another way and do Phil Rudd [ AC/DC ]’,” the frontman surmised.
