Kurt Cobain 's estate has criticized an opera inspired by the stage adaptation of Gus Van Sant 's Last Days . The 2005 film stars Michael Pitt and is a fictionalized account of the final days of the Nirvana , who committed suicide in 1994.

The opera was performed at the Linbury Theatre by the Royal Opera House in London between October 7 and 11. The composition was by Oliver Leith with a libretto by Matt Copson , who co-directed the adaptation along with Anna Morrisey.

In a statement (via Daily Mail ), the musician's estate wrote that the opera was "created and written without their permission or consultation" and that "like the film, it is an unauthorized attempt to profit from Kurt's brief encounter with Gus Van Stat. That encounter has already been exploited for money countless times over the last 30 years, and enough is enough."

Although no legal action has been taken, a spokesperson for the Royal Opera House issued a statement reiterating that the production of Last Days is an adaptation of Van Sant's 2005 film and therefore has no direct connection to Cobain. "It is a work of fiction that was produced with the permission of Gus Van Sant and HBO."

At the time of publication of this article, there had been no response from Kurt Cobain's estate.
