Unsurprisingly, Kurt Cobain Nirvana 's legendary MTV Unplugged performance was auctioned for $6.01 million, becoming the most valuable item ever sold at Julien's Auctions . The title previously belonged to David Gilmour 's Stratocaster , which sold for $3.95 million.
The lucky winner of the auction was Peter Freedman of RØDE Microphones , and the collector didn't spend that amount just to admire the guitar alone, as he's a huge fan of Nirvana and the album Nevermind . Freedman aims to exhibit Cobain's guitar in various places around the world and use the profits from the exhibitions to invest in the performing arts and the art industry.
“When I learned that this iconic guitar was up for auction, I knew immediately that it was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to protect it and use it as a vehicle to highlight the struggles that the performing arts are facing and have always faced,” said Freedman. “The global arts industry has been shaken by the impact of COVID-19, with musicians and artists among the hardest hit. The last few months have been the straw that broke the camel’s back, and for many in the arts, it has brought to light the harsh reality that they work in a sector for which there is little support in times of need.”
