Kurt Cobain 's death may have been a homicide. The Nirvana died on April 5, 1994, in Seattle, with the cause of death officially classified as suicide by shotgun wound.
According to the Daily Mail , a group of private experts re-examined autopsy and crime scene materials and concluded that there are inconsistencies in the original version, suggesting that Cobain may have been the victim of a staged homicide. The researchers point to organ damage and other evidence that, in their assessment, would be more aligned with a prior overdose and a possible attack committed by someone, not with an immediate death by firearm.
The team, led by forensic expert Brian Burnett and investigator Michelle Wilkins , told the Daily Mail that the scene found could have been staged to look like a suicide and that further investigation could clarify the facts. After just three days of critically analyzing the evidence, Burnett stated: “This is a homicide. We need to do something about it.”
Michelle Wilkins said, “There are things in the autopsy that make us think, ‘Wait a minute, this person didn’t die so quickly from a gunshot.’ Brain and liver necrosis occurs in an overdose. It doesn’t occur in a shotgun death.”.
Seattle authorities and the King County Medical Examiner's Office maintain their original conclusion of suicide. They assert that the autopsy and procedures were conducted correctly at the time and that there is insufficient new evidence to reopen the case.
