In August, the first official teaser for the film The Batman was released during the DC FanDome Nirvana fans by using the song "Something In The Way," from the album Nevermind (1991), as its theme.
Now, in a recent interview with Empire , director Matt Reeves revealed that the song not only helped change the course of the film's original script, but that Kurt Cobain also served as a major inspiration for the Bruce Wayne that will be played by Robert Pattinson ( Twilight, The Lighthouse, The Devil All the Time ).
“I listen to music when I write, and while I was writing the first act I put on Nirvana’s ‘Something In The Way’,” Reeves says. “That’s when it occurred to me that, instead of doing the playboy version of Bruce Wayne that we’ve seen before, there was another version, [of someone who] had gone through a great tragedy and become reclusive. So I started making that connection with Gus Van Sant ’s Last Days , and the idea of this fictional version of Kurt Cobain in a somewhat dilapidated mansion.”
Reeves also defended his choice of Robert Pattinson for the role and gave his justification. “He also has that Kurt Cobain trait where he seems like a rock star but you also feel he could be reclusive,” he reflected. The director also stated that his new version of Bruce Wayne “is not a socialite in any way,” which completely changed the character's aesthetic.
