Korn guitarist James “Munky” Shaffer spoke in an interview with NME about how the partnership with Robert Trujillo's son, Tye Trujillo, came about, who played in place of bassist Fieldy on the South American tour. Munky also talked about how the boy, who is only 12 years old, is handling the opportunity:
“It’s great, we’re having fun! He’s loving it.”
His dad's with us, just hanging out and chatting. Tye knows 17 or 18 Korn songs and he can play them really well. It's insane. All the stops, everything.
It's crazy to see someone so young be so talented. He's going to be a professional musician, and knowing that so early in life is inspiring.
"When we do shows, people ask for photos, ask for autographs. He's a little surprised, but he's handling everything like his father, in a cool, shy, and modest way."
Asked how the partnership came about, Munky explained: “There was a moment when the guys from Metallica and Jonathan Davis and Fieldy kind of met at an airport and Robert said, 'Hey, have you seen my son playing bass?'”
They watched some videos and Jonathan and Fieldy were like, “Wow! He’s really good!” When we found out Fieldy wasn’t going to be able to come on this trip with us, he suggested Tye.
And he's not just any replacement. He has the DNA of Robert Trujillo, one of the greatest bass players on the planet! You can see it, it's crazy how much you can see his father in him. His band, The Helmets, is mixing some songs they recorded. It would be really cool if The Helmets could open for Korn in the future.”.
