Continuing its project of bringing Kool Metal Fest to cities beyond São Paulo, the event – which celebrates its 20th anniversary in 2023 – arrives at Circo Voador in Rio de Janeiro, a magical venue and one of the most important stages for Brazilian music. The special event takes place on August 25th, with doors opening at 7 PM.
At this Kool Metal – 20 Years in Rio de Janeiro festival, the main attraction is Brujeria with their tour celebrating the 30th anniversary of their debut album, the seminal Matando Güeros.
Rounding out the party are the ever-proud and heavy Ratos de Porão , playing songs from their 2022 album, the highly praised Necropolítica , plus classics from their 42-year career.
Also performing on August 25th are the bands Gangrena Gasosa , with their classic and anarchic metal saravá, and Velho , a band that puts on one of the most visceral shows today with their gloomy metal.
Brujeria and 30 years of Matando Güeros
Brujeria turns 34 in 2019. It was formed in 1989 by Americans of Latin descent. At the time, concealing the musicians' real names fueled rumors about their faces and also about controversial issues involving illegal activities, and helped create a mystique around the band, which soon was playing many shows, with music videos on MTV and a contract with Roadrunner Records.
Always led by vocalist Juan Brujo , Brujeria has had numerous lineups, featuring top-tier heavy metal musicians. Today, Brujeria consists of Brujo (vocals), Fantasma (backing vocals), Pinche Peach (backing vocals), El Sangrón (backing vocals), Hongo (bass), El Criminal (guitar), and Podrido (drums).
Matando Güeros is the debut album by the band Brujeria. “Güero” is a Mexican-Spanish slang term for a person who is blonde or has fair skin/hair. The album deals, with irony and criticism, with controversial themes in Mexico, such as drug trafficking, satanic rituals, sexuality, migration, illegal border crossings, and anti-Americanism.
