Sepultura guitarist recalls rehearsal with Metallica
Sepultura guitarist Andreas Kisser told the story of when he auditioned to replace James Hetfield as Metallica when Hetfield was injured.
Called by the band's bassist at the time, Jason Newsted, Kisser went to Denver to audition: “I knew all the Metallica songs by heart. On my first day, only Lars Ulrich, Kirk Hammett, and Newsted were there. They liked me a lot and asked me to come back the next day.”

According to the guitarist, the competition was between him and James Marshall, guitarist for Metal Church, who had previously been a roadie for Metallica and filled in for Hetfield on another occasion. On the second day, Kisser played for the entire band.
“Maybe they didn’t choose me because I wasn’t ready. I played a lot of songs with them – 'The Shortest Straw', 'One', and 'Enter Sandman' – but 'The Unforgiven' was difficult for me, as was 'Nothing Else Matters'. And I was nervous. Walking into Metallica’s rehearsal room was like a dream/nightmare for me.”
Despite not getting the job, Kisser has since become friends with Jason Newsted. In an interview with Wikimetal earlier this year, the bassist said he has a great relationship with Kisser: “Andreas Kisser is one of my all-time favorite human beings. He’s probably my favorite guitarist.”
